How did you come to be in your current role?
I graduated with a Bachelor of Medical Science and went into pathology, and slowly made my way through the ranks.
Why did you decide to study an MBA?
I decided to study an MBA mainly because I’m a big believer in continuous learning. I had sort of reached a plateau in my career. Unlike most people with an MBA, I hadn’t already achieved management status. I was looking to get into management – middle management. I was in a supervisorial role and decided an MBA would probably be the best thing to catapult me into the next level, which it did and actually exceeded that; I went to the second next level.
A lot of students struggle with time commitments and their private lives while studying an MBA. How did you make this work?
The time commitment thing was very difficult. I fell pregnant pretty much two weeks after I decided to sign up for my MBA and I was unsure whether or not I should actually proceed or not. I decided, yes, I’ll do it.
For the first six months of my pregnancy I studied my first four subjects and then had my baby. I had probably about nine months off, and then continued studying again with a nine month old child, which was really difficult. You find a way – you lock the times in, to study, you lock in family time. Then I went back part-time to work, as well, so you lock in that time as well.
