Allan and Carla Bartolcic, a driven couple with a shared passion for growth and development, took on the challenge of completing their MBA together at AIB. Allan, an Executive Director in the non-profit sector, and Carla, a training consultant, each tailored their studies to complement their unique career paths. By pursuing their MBA together, they not only expanded their professional skill sets but also strengthened their relationship, learning to support each other through the challenges of balancing study and life. In the interview below, Allan and Carla reflect on their decision to study at AIB, how the MBA has impacted their careers, and what it’s like to graduate together at AIB’s first-ever Canadian ceremony.
What motivated you to pursue further studies?
Allan: During the height of the pandemic, I was reflecting on my skill set and looking for ways to enhance my career. While scrolling through social media, I came across AIB. I loved the flexibility of the courses and the ability to earn certificates every few subjects. As I was exploring the idea, Carla got interested too, saying, “If you’re doing it, why can’t I join?” We both saw this as a chance to grow together, professionally and personally.
Carla: I felt a bit left out when Allan started considering AIB, so I joined too. It was a great way for us to work towards something meaningful together, even though we focused on different areas. Allan delved into marketing and digital fields, while I concentrated on HR and learning and development to support my own career goals.
Do you think studying together strengthened your relationship?
Allan: Absolutely, it brought us closer and taught us how to work together better. Studying side by side gave us a “study buddy” to lean on, and we developed new ways of supporting each other. It wasn’t always easy, but the benefits far outweighed any challenges.
Carla: We learned a lot about each other, and it made us stronger as a couple. Having someone to discuss ideas with and provide feedback was invaluable. It’s an experience I’d recommend to any strong couple looking to grow together.
How has your AIB education impacted your careers?
Allan: The MBA shifted my approach to management and governance, helping me understand systems holistically. It’s given me the confidence to pursue contracting roles and negotiate my value. The knowledge I’ve gained has opened doors and changed my career trajectory significantly.
Carla: The MBA has broadened my perspective, especially in terms of applying business principles to my role. I feel more capable and equipped to contribute meaningfully at work, and I’ve noticed that employers value the AIB accreditation. It’s definitely made a difference in my career.
What’s next for you both?
Allan and Carla: The world feels full of possibilities. We’re excited to keep building our careers and personal lives together. We dream big, and we’re looking forward to what’s next—whether it’s new career opportunities or further adventures. The MBA journey has been incredibly fulfilling, and it’s given us the confidence to believe that anything is possible.
