The comprehensive knowledge gained from studying Corporate Finance lays a strong foundation for careers as financial analysts, investment bankers, specialists in risk management and many more, as it equips individuals with the skills to analyse and manage financial operations effectively.

Furthermore, this subject is crucial for those in leadership roles or aiming for board positions. In today’s dynamic business environment, having sound financial acumen is imperative for making strategic decisions and guiding an organisation towards financial success.

Entrepreneurs, or those planning to start their own businesses, will find this subject exceptionally valuable too. Understanding different sources of funds and their costs is key to securing funding and managing a startup’s financial health.

In essence, anyone planning to run their own business or seeking to make informed, rational financial decisions in a corporate setting will benefit from studying Corporate Finance. It not only equips individuals with the ability to manage financial risks but also empowers them with a strategic mindset to navigate the complex world of corporate finance.

Is a background in finance required to be successful in this subject?

It’s not. Any prior experience in finance will be helpful, but it’s certainly not required. Within your MBA timetable, AIB’s core finance subject Financial Management will be completed before you undertake Corporate Finance, should you choose it as an elective or if you’re specialising your MBA in finance. Corporate Finance extends the skills, knowledge and application for Financial Management in the areas of capital budgeting, capital structure and business payout policies, among others.

Will there be complex calculations and math to navigate studying Corporate Finance?

We recognise that finance can often seem daunting. So, we have adopted a simplistic and holistic approach, focusing on the application of concepts. This ensures that the subject is accessible and highly relevant to your daily roles, whether you are an aspiring entrepreneur or a finance professional seeking to deepen your expertise.

When financial calculations are required, it’s completed using Excel spreadsheets with equations and formulas shown in subject webinars and practiced first in learning activities each week, so you interact with any complex example problems first at your own pace before practical implementation.

How is the subject structured and delivered?

Corporate Finance is delivered over eight weeks of structured learning where you’ll delve into a new topic relevant to finance in a corporate setting each week. Weekly online webinars are hosted with your online class and led by Online Learning Facilitators who facilitate interactive discussions on the topics, case studies and application of concepts within organisations. Contribution in live webinars enables you to learn not only from the learning material and facilitator, but also from the experiences and viewpoints of fellow professionals studying alongside you. Don’t worry if you can’t make all the live webinars though – they’re recorded, so you can watch at any time. The subject includes two assessments – one due mid-way through the subject and the other at the end.

Can I specialise my MBA in Finance?

Yes, AIB offers an MBA specialisation in Finance which supports experienced and aspiring finance professionals to excel their careers in the sector. Covering more than just the numbers, this specialised MBA guides students through the universally used theoretical frameworks and data-driven techniques relevant to modern private sector companies, the public sector and not-for-profit organisations.

Studying the specialised Finance MBA, students will take AIB’s core business subjects before undertaking the finance discipline units: Corporate Finance, Investment Management and Financial Markets and Institutions. Following completion of the final subject – Project – they will earn their MBA specialised in Finance. The specialised finance subjects can also be studied as electives by those undertaking the General (unspecialised) MBA.
