By The Australian Institute of Business

Welcome to AIB Review

AIB Review is our very own digital quarterly industry publication that brings the expertise and insights of the AIB community to trending issues in the business world. It is part of AIB’s commitment to deliver ongoing value to our past and present student community. Since its inception, AIB Review is now distributed to over 200,000 alumni, current students and community members, with readership growing with each issue.

The Twelfth Issue – Evolving Perspectives on Work-Life Integration and Professional Growth: Empowering Choices

Welcome to the 12th issue of the AIB Review, a special edition dedicated to exploring the dynamic and evolving perspectives on work-life integration and professional growth. This issue, guest-edited by Dr. Mahan Poorhosseinzadeh and Dr. Parth Patel, Senior Lecturers at the Australian Institute of Business (AIB), aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of work-life balance, reproductive leave policies and career growth. Through a diverse array of eleven insightful articles, we seek to offer actionable insights for policymakers, organisations and individuals, paving the way for more inclusive and sustainable approaches to empower choices in the modern workplace as work environments and societal norms continue to change.

We invite readers from all sectors, including academics, practitioners, legal experts, government officials and professionals, to engage with these articles and join the conversation on the evolving landscape of work-life integration. By sharing diverse perspectives and experiences, we hope to contribute to a more inclusive and empowered workforce, where everyone can thrive both professionally and personally.

Pregnant and Working? Breaking Barriers and Rethinking Workplace Policies for Inclusive Support

Bianca Lemon, Executive General Manager Market Development, SKOPE Industries and DBA Candidate, Australian Institute of Business
Soraiya Fuda, Media Executive, Head of Content and Planning, News Corp Australia
Dr Alicia Stanway, Discipline Leader (Human Resources and Management) and Senior Lecturer, Australian Institute of Business Associate Professor Mulyadi Robin, Associate Dean (Teaching and Learning), Australian Institute of Business

In the realm of workplace policies in Australia, this article delves into the intricate dynamics at play where advancements and challenges converge for pregnant employees. Despite strides in acknowledging expectant mothers’ rights, a nuanced struggle persists within family leave frameworks, particularly regarding antenatal care. We highlight the critical evolution of policies to cater to women’s health needs in professional settings, emphasising the pivotal role of inclusivity in fostering equitable workplaces.

Boosting Satisfaction and Career Growth with Family Benefits and Inclusive Policies

Samir Sukkar, Board member in various insurance companies, Australian Institute of Business Alumni
Mahan Poorhosseinzadeh, Senior Lecturer, Australian Institute of Business

Fostering diversity and inclusion within organisations supports employees across various life stages, enhancing engagement, retention and professional development. An inclusive culture benefits both employees and companies, as illustrated by initiatives like reproductive leave policies and family-friendly benefits. This article highlights the importance of confronting workplace challenges such as discrimination against pregnant and parenting workers to achieve true inclusivity. Embracing diversity and inclusion can be a strategic advantage, driving innovation, productivity and competitiveness, as seen in companies like Google and Patagonia.

The Pregnant Pause: Challenges in Reproductive Leave for Professional Dancers

Sarah R. B. Ahmadi, Doctorate of Business Administration Candidate, Australian Institute of Business
Dr Svetlana De Vos, Discipline Leader Marketing and Entrepreneurship and Senior Lecturer, Australian Institute of Business
Dr Bora Qesja, Senior Lecturer, Australian Institute of Business
Dr Samaneh Soleimani, Lecturer, Australian Institute of Business

This article explores the experience of women who become pregnant while in the dance industry.  While maternity leave is encoded in Canadian legislation, this industry is one where the dancer’s physical state is a factor in hiring in that it represents the image of the company.  As such, is reproductive leave enough for this industry?  Are dancers empowered in pregnancy or is there a gap between leave policies and lived experience?

The Balancing Act: Can You Grow Your Career While Enjoying Work-Life Harmony?

Camilla Hasloch, Founder of Glass Ceiling Career Management and NBHR Consulting, Australian Institute of Business Alumni

Balancing career success with personal life involves six key strategies: adaptability, continuous learning, strategic networking, digital literacy, wellbeing and purpose-driven careers. This article explores how adaptability and continuous learning keep you relevant while strategic networking and digital literacy enhance opportunities. Prioritising wellbeing ensures a healthy work-life balance and aligning your values with your career fosters satisfaction. The holistic approach of the Kaleidoscope Career Model (KCM) supports this balance for long-term success and fulfilment.

Employee Treatment and Financial Performance

Dr Amanpreet Kaur, Lecturer, Australian Institute of Business
Dr Christiana Osei Bonsu, Lecturer, Australian Institute of Business
Mahan Poorhosseinzadeh, Senior Lecturer, Australian Institute of Business

Employees are an organisation’s most valuable asset—when treated fairly, they drive financial performance. Fair treatment of employees encompasses flexible work arrangements; health and safety policies; profit sharing; retirement benefits; diversity, equality and inclusivity initiatives; and, policies that balance work and family life. This article positions such treatment as a beneficial investment leading to financial benefits like improved performance, enhanced innovation and a strong organisational reputation.

Professional Growth vs. Personal Life Focus: Evolving Perspectives on Work-Life Harmony and How Organisations Can Embrace the Empowered Workplace

Micah Walker, Founder and CEO, Eagle Origins, Australian Institute of Business Alumni and AIB Industry Advisory Board member
Megan Holden-Wells, Group Marketing Co-ordinator, Bi-Rite Home Appliances

Work-life harmony is not a simple equation. Career development and a fulfilling personal life are often portrayed as opposing goals, though they are two sides of the human experience and can exist in harmony over a lifetime. By unlocking the potential of the empowered workplace to achieve personal fulfilment, pioneering organisations can redefine enterprise growth as a source of human flourishing.

Beyond Gender: To Have Work-Life Balance, First, You Need a Job!

Carlene Boucher, Lecturer, Australian Institute of Business.

Work-life balance is crucial for many in the workforce, including those considering joining, re-joining or staying, such as mothers and mature workers. However, for people with disabilities, securing a job is the first challenge as they are much less likely to be employed. Despite employers often facing staffing shortages, unconscious bias and a lack of trust hinder the recruitment of people with disabilities. Good practices from companies like Wesfarmers, Vodafone, the Australian Public Service and IBM Canada showcase successful strategies for not only hiring but also supporting employees with disabilities through work-life balance initiatives. These include flexible hours, remote work, accessible accommodations and targeted recruitment efforts. The article highlights the need for visible executive support, proactive recruitment, inclusive policies and comprehensive education to create a truly inclusive workplace.

Different Strokes for Different Folks

Dr Bhavna Bajaj, Lecturer, Australian Institute of Business

Many companies offer parental benefits solely focused on paid and unpaid leave, neglecting the diverse needs of modern families. This ‘one-size-fits-all’ approach fails to address the realities of single-parent households and other family configurations. This article explores how leveraging social capital theory can help employers enhance their support for new parents. By focusing on bonding within the company, bridging connections with experienced colleagues and linking to external resources, employers can foster a positive work-life balance. Examples of good practice include flexible hours, remote work and supportive community initiatives. Clear communication and accessibility of these benefits are crucial and viewing parental leave as a strategic advantage rather than just a compliance issue can attract and retain top talent.

Evolution and Prospects: Tracing the Trajectory of Reproductive Leave Policies in Australian Workplaces

Jessica Heron, Lawyer, Maurice Blackburn Mahan Poorhosseinzadeh, Senior Lecturer, Australian Institute of Business

Reproductive leave and flexible work policies are crucial in Australia, addressing challenges employees face during menstruation, menopause, fertility treatments and reproductive health screenings. These policies promote gender equality, work-life balance and overall well-being. Despite limited provisions in current legislation, recent advocacy has sparked a campaign to expand these rights, highlighting their importance for workplace inclusivity. The Together Union survey reveals the significant impact of inadequate reproductive health support on retention, productivity and mental well-being. Many employees are willing to use designated leave for reproductive health issues. The article calls for urgent policy reform to provide inclusive and supportive reproductive health measures in the workplace, ensuring necessary support without stigma.

Mastering the Balance: Boundary Management Strategies for Career Succession and Work-Life Equilibrium

Dr Shuana Zafar Nasir, Lecturer, Australian Institute of Business
Nasir Mahmood, Online Learning Facilitator, Australian Institute of Business/Lecturer, Victorian School of Commerce

In the ever-changing landscape of the modern workplace, where the demands of career and personal life intertwine, a pressing need arises for a nuanced exploration of the delicate balance between work-life and the pursuit of professional growth. This article embarks on a journey to outline some boundary management strategies that support individuals in progressing in their careers and navigating personal life milestones with resilience.

Outcomes of a National Review: Work Conditions and Equity for Australian Parents

Dr Rachael Potter, Research Fellow, University of South Australia

Over 1,000 pregnant and parent workers responded to a comprehensive National Review into work conditions and experiences of discrimination. 89.0% of respondents reported experiencing work-related discrimination, disadvantage and/or bias during pregnancy, 84.7% during parental leave and 92.8 % during return-to-work. Without greater preventative or intervening action from stakeholder groups, the discrimination raised in the review will remain pervasive, socially tolerated, and ‘normal’, with adverse effects for this important population.
