4 qualities every marketing professional should possess
When working in marketing, the stereotype is that you sit around all day on Facebook and spend much of your time being social or building relationships. While this is partially true, many people aren’t aware of the level of technical knowledge required, as well as the other associated qualities necessary for success. Whether you’re considering a career in the field, curious about what marketers’ strengths are, or are already established and looking to further develop your skills – the below list encompasses some of the most important characteristics of a successful marketing professional.
1. A desire for lifelong learning
One thing that is for sure in marketing is that ‘the only constant is change’. Technology, social media and the best means of communicating your messages are forever changing. What was once a print advertisement may now be better communicated as a Google AdWords campaign, and that is just touching the surface. With practices always changing, a great marketing professional is committed to lifelong learning and is always looking to better their skills. Courses such as one-day refreshers, as well as those such as the MBA (specialising in Marketing Management) can help marketers always stay on top of the game.
2. Exceptional communication skills
This should go without saying in a career which is known for communication, however many marketing professionals still lack sound communication skills. This not only refers to verbal communication, it also means exceptional writing skills. Writing is more important than you think – it is essential for creating succinct and effective ads, campaigns, email copy and more. If you’re in marketing but don’t feel that communication is your strength, make an effort to read widely and practice your writing skills where possible. Competitions that require a 25 words or less response are a great way to practice conveying your message in a short, sharp and witty way.
3. Ability to think strategically
Strategic thinking should be a major strength of a marketing professional. Any company seeking a marketing plan is looking for something that will align with the overall business strategy, as well as looking at other opportunities that exist in their market. Marketing professionals need to be able to understand market trends and create a tailored plan, while considering the overall strategic direction. In addition, they should protect their brand by forecasting potential issues with collateral, considering carefully how a market is going to interpret the messaging.
4. Vibrant personality
Everyone has his or her own personality, but a marketing professional should strive to be engaging and innovative. Within a business environment, people expect the marketing team to be well presented, confident and on top of their game. It is a person’s personality that shines through campaigns, and allows a marketer to be more creative in their work. A marketing professional’s job is to constantly think of new ways to convey the same or similar message. As such, when your personality can shine through into your work, it is ideal.
