Subject Summary

If you want to pursue a career in professional investment management or financial planning, or you’re looking for the tools to manage your own portfolio, AIB’s Investment Management MBA subject is for you. This specialist finance subject covers the fundamentals of investments and portfolio management, with particular attention to the selection of securities, construction of an efficient portfolio and evaluation of portfolio performance.

Over 8 weeks, you’ll work with major theoretical investment management concepts, including modern portfolio theory, diversification and equilibrium models of security prices, getting hands-on with models such as the Capital Asset Pricing Model, Index Models, Arbitrage Pricing Theory and Multifactor Models of Risk and Return. The subject also includes macroeconomic and industry analysis as well as pricing of and markets for main financial derivatives. 

To build your technical skillset, you’ll be assisted in learning how to use Excel Solver to create an efficient frontier, capital allocation line, and other math formula commonly used for investment management analysis in financial economics. And each week, you’ll engage in interactive activities to bring the subject content to life and hone your new knowledge and skills in investment management.

Assessment

In Investment Management, students undertake two assessments aimed at developing analytical and decision-making skills in investment strategies. The first involves computing risk-return characteristics of asset classes, constructing an efficient frontier and capital allocation line in Excel. In the second assessment, students act as senior investment analysts to evaluate industries or sectors for Exchange Traded Funds (ETFs) investment, producing an industry analysis report.  

I pursued an MBA to enhance my understanding of business and finance, finding particular interest in the fundamental concepts of business. The expertise acquired has been crucial in applying effective strategies and skills in my workplace. The MBA not only equipped me with vital skills but also stimulated my curiosity in specific areas, encouraging further self-directed learning to adapt to varying professional circumstances.

How will I benefit from studying Investment Management? 

Finance professionals, in particular those in investment management or financial planning careers, and individuals hoping to manage their own portfolio, will benefit greatly from AIB’s Investment Management subject. It will improve your financial literacy and use of excel with respect to identifying assets risks and returns and analysing which combinations improves your portfolio performance, as well as understanding how macro factors impact sector performance. Derivatives are also used to show strategies to protect against downside return risks.  

Is a background in finance required to be successful in this subject? 

It’s not. Any prior experience in finance will be helpful but it is not required, as long as you are comfortable working with numbers and passionate about finance. Within your MBA timetable, AIB’s core finance subject Financial Management will be completed before you undertake Investment Management, should you choose it as an elective or if you’re specialising your MBA in Finance. Investment Management extends the skills, knowledge and application for Financial Management in the areas of investments and portfolio management.  

Can I specialise my MBA in Finance? 

Yes, AIB offers an MBA specialisation in Finance which supports experienced and aspiring finance professionals to excel their careers in the sector. Covering more than just the numbers, this specialised MBA guides students through the universally used theoretical frameworks and data-driven techniques relevant to modern private sector companies, the public sector and not-for-profit organisations.   

Studying the specialised Finance MBA, students will take AIB’s core business subjects before undertaking the finance discipline units: Corporate Finance, Investment Management and Financial Markets and Institutions. Following completion of the final subject – Project – they will earn their MBA specialised in Finance. The specialised finance subjects can also be studied as electives by those undertaking the General (unspecialised) MBA.
